Khalil Jacobs is a sixteen-year-old boy tired of the project life and seeing his mother struggle to take care of him and his two younger siblings. Daddy was long gone so he has to step and be the man. He might be young but Khalil is wise beyond his years. Nadir Pullman grew up in foster care and lived a life of being bounced around from home to home, not having anyone to care for him until he came to live with Ms. Sue and met his three homeboys. Nadir isn’t a punk but he isn’t cut out to live the hood life either. Young Nadir wants to be a lawyer. Isiah Chance had to grow up faster than his homeboys, simply because he already has a family of his own to support. He lives with his sickly grandmother, his son Mason, and his son’s mother Natalie. Gino Thompson is the tallest and the huskiest out of the crew. He is the oldest out of his mother Cheryl’s four children. Gino, like his homeboy Khalil, took on the role of being a father to them. When Khalil grows tired of being broke he brings his friends in on a scheme to take over and make them the true kings of the city because being broke is no longer an option for them. Come join these young kings as they rise to the top of the game and give a whole new meaning to the phrase “started from the bottom.” The streets of Virginia will never be the same again.

Ok, it's been a minute since I've read a book with the settings in the "hood" however, after finally taking a leap of faith I decided to give this book and author a fair shot.
I must say not only was I impress of the writing I was also moved by the way the storyline was taking me.
It started off with four friends with the potential of creating a suitable way out the life and making something of themselves. Yet, not everything that looks good on paper is actually real in life.
Chances, choices, life... I keep repeating as I understand this well versed tale.
Love, family life... how bad it is inhabiting a life knowing the more good you try to make the harder it becomes???
Let's first start off with Khalil:
He possesses the potential to become the next NFL superstar.. His football stats will have major colleges knocking down his door. But.. his home situation isn't a bed of roses he is, the oldest of three kids, so the stack was already set against him.. His mother ... A hard working single female parent who works tirelessly to make ends meet but still never enough. Financially she was there, but to tend to the kids and do motherly things she was disconnected.
Khalil though fighting internally to keep his Lil family together has to decide if this is life? Surely there is better out there right??
The game is calling Khalil will he answer the claim??
Up next we have Isaiah:
Another product of the street... he was conjured up by a woman who cared for him until she was diagnosed with an incurable disease.. His strength came in the contour of a young queen Natalie
She was a savior.. A woman created for him in every sense of the way..
A kid came in the beginning of their relationship, something obviously wasn't planned, but he accepted the challenge and vow to do right by his little household..
He was determined to overcome the odds, prove to the naysayers that yes, I can continue my schooling and still be a dad to my son Mason.
The game is also calling Isaiah will he swallow the call?? When life brings you problems at such an early age, it's crying out to you... well he take the games unanswered call??
And so we have Gino:
Mom living at home but is always absent because once again work, work and more work. Unbeknownst to Gino he was the unofficial man of the home, taking care of the his siblings while doing extra curricular activities for local head man in charge "Vegas"
On the low Vegas is like that loan shark that comes around sneakily preying on hood misfits waiting to spit the sob old story of how good he can make your life more comfortable if you come on his side. See Gino done answered that call, but his ears been picked... soft whispers and murmurs entered through his audio channel..When are you going to help recruit your other friends?? So Vegas continuously asked.
Will Gino delivered that call???.
Now Nadir story was really different.. His story introduced us to a systematic situation. Like so many he was in bred into the system.. He had parents who chose drugs over their only child a mother more concern about her next fix rather than the welfare of her son, he was however fortunate to not become lost into the system. He was placed into a loving foster home with a woman whose heart was made of pure gold who not only realized the potential in Nadir but knew that he needed nurturing and caring as he had a drug addiction problem, not any fault of his. He not only was fighting to stay clean but was plagued with other health problems that's requires assistance. She assisted Nadir through all his ills and he in turned became an upstanding young men one that would make you proud to call your own.
And then here you have a tale of hood misfits seeking to find a place in this cruel world any way necessary.
Along the direction they have to trust one another, trust their instincts put family and love above each other cause once they start breaking bread everybody will take notice and the leeches will crawl out of the dark places ready to latch on.
I must commend this author she did an excellent job of weaving a tale taking you through the lives of these four Friends. The rise and fall of a tumultuous journey capture through the very essence of an authors vivid and descriptive imagination. We see All their ups and downs. It's a tale that gains you to think make your remove your perfect world glasses and look thru the lens of real life situations and how do you deal with them.
I implore you fellow readers to give this book a chance it's beautifully written and will have you turning the pages in anticipation. The lesson and knowledge gain reading this book broke through my eyes filtered through my brains and jumpstart my love for reading a well put tales.

The book would've gotten 4 stars but i didn't like how they were all good and then just turned cold especially Khalil. I can understand good to bad, but they became too cold. Hated how Khalil had no girl, hated who he became, and his mother hated what happened to her.
This book put me in mind of the author's first book Devil Behind The Pulpit. There were a LOT of characters that held no substance and the storyline felt pretty much the same. Sadly I gave up at 50%.

Love this story. Khalil had one main objective and that was to make sure his family no longer struggled. It seemed as if Ms.Yolanda tried her best. Gino was cool and wanted nothing more than to take care of his fam and Josie. Isaiah also shared the same ambition as his friends. Didn't care for Jackie and Natalie's mom and aunt. Curious to see what happens in the sequel with Lori and Vegas as well. Great read!!!
For me this book started off quite slow, but I'm glad that I stuck with it. The plot was a really believable one, that center's around, four friends. Khalil, Nadir, Isiah, and Gino, who all are high school students. They all have something in common and that's too take care of their families. Well Vegas the big man on the street, become their plug, and from that point on things change. Is this change for the better ? Are the four friends about too take care of their families ? Download this book too see what will become of the four friends as they navigate their way through the streets. Yes I would recommend this book, because although I'm not a big fan of street fiction, it was an enjoyable read. There were some grammar mistakes, so therefore I rate this book 4/5 stars.
Loved it from beginning to end, can't wait to see what Khalil, Isaiah, and Gino get into next, they mean business don't mess with the family. Is Nadir gonna want revenge?
I love this book well written the story was told I like the crew but are no joke but everybody have a soft heart for their woman Kali took care of his family looking forward for part two what is nasir will do ? What will the team do while vegas on lockdown we will see part two it just got real
Above is the state you will find yourself in if you should be so unfortunately duped into reading this literary catastrophe. I would label it as something written by a juvenile, but I do not want to insult the teenage population. Therefore, I shall just credit it to writing like an infantile; sorry babies that I have to lay this farce at your feet, but that's the truth of the matter, as it pertains to this whack storyline and characters. Truthfully, a third grader, just becoming familiar with diagraming sentence structure, could have done a better job.

I have nothing, and I do mean nothing about this book, to recommend any future readers to read this travesty. But, if you like me have already tread the waters and was fooled by these five star reviewers, we just have to suck it up and search out a good read to attempt to wash the bad taste of this read out of our mouths; if not out of our minds. The only redeeming quality to this farcical read is the price. At least the price did not hurt the purchasers like the reading of the tale did!
